Use of percentiles for the body mass index in anorexia nervosa: diagnostic, epidemiological, and therapeutic considerations

Article Abstract:

The weight criterion for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is equal to body mass index (BMI) values between the 5th and 10th centiles in the US and German populations. Epidemiologically, the lowest BMI values in individuals aged 10 years and older occur during adolescence while the lower BMI values are rare in the general population. The low BMI rate associated with the 5th and 10th centile in the 18 and 30 years age range indicates minimal weight gained during this age span by underweight females in the general population.

Course and outcome in adolescent anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

Adolescent anorexia nervosa patients studied exhibit substantial improvement in their eating disorder symptomatology across a seven year period. Patients with persistent eating disorders suffer from the restrictive symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Anxiety disorders followed by affective disorders are widely prevalent comorbid psychiatric disorders among adolescent and adult anorexia nervosa patients. Patients with a worse outcome of the eating disorder manifest higher levels of general psychopathology.

Elevated plasma lipids in patients with binge eating disorders are found only in those who are anorexic

Article Abstract:

A study aimed to examine whether lipid and lipoprotein levels in two groups of symptomatic bulimic eating disorder female subjects (AN-B and BN) are abnormal, compared to healthy normal weight female controls. Levels of total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and apoB and apoA1 concentrations were higher in the AN-B group, compared to female controls and women with nonrestricting BN. Plasma triglyceride levels were also higher in the AN-B group than the BN group.
