In conscience's talons: the suicide of a Vietnam veteran

Article Abstract:

A case study of a Vietnam veteran who eventually killed himself despite receiving extensive psychiatric help is presented. The veteran suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder. He displayed irritability, guilt, exaggerated startle reaction and guardedness. His path to destruction is clearly reflected in his dreams of a Vietcong slashing his throat. The prospect of his wife and therapist leaving him became the final blow in his decision to kill himself.
