Incest and idealization

Article Abstract:

A presentation on incest and idealization was given by Michelle Price at a meeting of the Assn for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis on Jan 21, 1993. Sylvia Olarte was the discussant for the presentation. Price explained how victims of incest use idealization to cope with a pathological environment. Idealization helps to maintain the illusion of parental stability and security destroyed by incest. Abusive parent/child interactions often influence the way victims approach future relationships.

Theory and its relation to early affective experience

Article Abstract:

A presentation was given by Daniel H. Jacobs at a meeting of the Assn for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis on Feb 18, 1993. Joyce Lerner was the discussant for the talk. Jacobs suggests that theoretical preferences stem from unconscious configurations. The adult's use of particular theories can be seen as an outgrowth of early object relations and the mother-child relationship. Jacobs draws on Piaget's theories of development.

Early interaction structures and the origins of self and object representations

Article Abstract:

Beatrice Beebe described a new paradigm in research on mother-infant interaction at a meeting of the Assn for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis on May 21, 1992. Earlier research emphasized the role of the mother whereas the current paradigm has paid increasing attention to the infant's role in the dyadic relationship. Beebe related her results to the relationship between therapist and patient in psychoanalysis.
