Infants' responsiveness to line junctions in curved objects

Article Abstract:

Studies have shown that infants of less than 6-7 months of age cannot extract static-monocular depth information from their environment. These studies have been extended with the use of a three-dimensional structure suggested by curved Y junctions. Infants of five and eight months of age viewed two displays after being habituated to the lined drawing of a cylinder. Eight month old subjects looked much longer at the dishabituation display lacking the edge, providing evidence that they can distinguish between lines indicating edges and those indicating markings, while the five month old subjects did not.
