Information displays and decision processes

Article Abstract:

Information provided in the form of computer displays can help decision making in certain ways, such as cutting down error rates, and reducing the effort involved in strategies involving computation. Despite the advantages, decision makers may be reluctant to use computing, especially more sophisticated software versions, due to a credibility problem. The cognitive strategy of the person making decisions is an important factor which affects the relationship between the effects of a decision and the aids used to make that decision. Cost-benefit analysis is a useful tool to understand implied trade-offs taken into account by people designing decision aids, in terms of cognitive costs and benefits used by decision makers. If these trade-offs become explicit, decision aids can be designed more effectively.

Broadening the definition of decision making: the role of prechoice screening options

Article Abstract:

Research on decision making indicates that the role of screening options prior to making a decision on which option to choose, is more important than hitherto realized. Image theory helps understands concepts such as how decision makers view how behaviour and events ought to be, how they see their future, and how they aim to achieve their objectives, and this helps understand the context of decision making. Screening ensures the surving options meet the requirements of the decision makers images. Screening and choice, however, are perceived as different processes, and information from the first process may not be used in the second. A wider view of the whole process would thus help in more effective decision making.
