Interaction between knowledge and contexts on understanding abstract mathematical concepts

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to examine the impact of sparse versus real context on people's comprehension of abstract mathematical concepts associated with the interpretation of linear graphs. Four experiments on isomorphic problems with linear graphs all suggest that understanding of abstract mathematical concepts is better facilitated by sparse contexts than real contexts. It is indicated that even the slightest change in the surface structure of a mathematical problem can significantly influence people's approach to problems.

The learning speed of children with learning disabilities is compared with the processing speed of children with no learning disabilities. The cognitive functions used by the two groups of children are also examined.
