Masochism and fear of success in Asian women: psychoanalytic mechanisms and problems in therapy

Article Abstract:

Fear of success exacerbated by masochism is complicated in Asian women by cultural factors. The mother's narcissistic identification with her daughter can lead the daughter to feel conflicts over separation, which result in self-sabotage, as in fear of success. For Asian women, self-depreciation is culturally reinforced, but conflicting pressures for achievement may also be experienced. The therapeutic goal of individuation conflicts with the Asian emphasis on family loyalty, making criticism of parents difficult. Expression of aggression is also difficult for Asian women.

Project and setting in psychoanalytic therapy

Article Abstract:

Psychoanalytic theory should not be separated from clinical practice, which is often surrendered to metapsychology. A biblical reference to Esau and Jacob is used to illustrate the relationship between metapsychology and clinical practice. These two parts should remain together in order to maintain a structure for psychological work. The project of psychoanalysis moves forward in the metapsychological, physical, and psychological setting.
