More differences about gender differences in marriage: a reply to Beach, Davey, and Fincham (1999)

Article Abstract:

A re-examination of the prospective connections between depressive symptoms and marital quality using a one-year time lag and an expanded sample including spouses in first marriages and remarriages with considerable variation in depressive symptoms has produced no evidence that the connection between depressive symptoms and marital quality is moderated by number of months living together at the first assessment. It seems misguided to claim that the prospective connections between depressive symptoms and marital quality differ for husbands and wives. Future research should use a conceptual basis for choosing the number of assessments to make and the length of time interval between assessments.

Relation between neuroticism and dimensions of relationship commitment: evidence from gay, lesbian, and heterosexual couples

Article Abstract:

Neuroticism, or negative affectivity, has been associated with relationship distress. A study of neuroticism and relationship commitment among gay, lesbian and heterosexual couples reveals that each partner's neuroticism predicts costs, alternatives and match to ideal standard. One partner's life satisfaction mediates the link between one's neuroticism and commitment dimensions, while the other partner's conflict resolution styles mediate the link between the partner's neuroticism and these same dimensions.

The link between facets of neuroticism and dimensions of relationship commitment: evidence from gay, lesbian, and heterosexual couples

Article Abstract:

Research into the connection between neuroticism and relationship commitment indicates that only the individual's own depression is negatively connected with that person's own attraction commitment. It can be asserted that depression forms the basis for the development of dysfunctional working models of both the self and the other. These working models eventually weaken the individual's motivation to maintain the relationship.
