Parenting, parent-child relationships, and sexual possibility situations among urban African American preadolescents: preliminary findings and implications for HIV prevention

Article Abstract:

Teenage African American mothers who enjoy parenting support seem to protect their prepubescent children from exposure to sexual possibility situations in urban areas. This is probably due to the mothers' availability to monitor and supervise their children. Parenting support refers to assistance in performing parental tasks and enforcing discipline. Sexual possibility situations occur when children experience private time with mixed-sex groups without supervision.

Parent functioning in families of preadolescents with spina bifida: Longitudinal implications for child adjustment

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to test a strength-of-association model regarding possible longitudinal and bidirectional associations between parent functioning and child adjustment in families of children with spina bifida and families of able-bodied children. It was found that associations between parent functioning and child adjustment tended to be in the direction of parent to child and were similar across both groups.

A longitudinal examination of familial risk factors for depression among inner-city African American adolescents

Article Abstract:

Research examines risk factors for depression among African American adolescents from poor, urban families, focusing on how family functioning influences child depressive symptomatology. Findings suggest that increases in family conflict and decreases in child monitoring are associated with increases in adolescent depression.
