Nonlinear acoustics in pant hoots of common chimpanzees (Pan trogflodytes): Frequency jumps, subharmonics, biphonation, and deterministic chaos

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate the occurrence of the nonlinear acoustics in pant hoot vocalizations, contrasting quieter and lower-pitched introduction components with loud and high-pitched climax calls in the same bouts. Spectroscopic evidence indicates four kinds of nonlinear phenomenon, including discrete frequency jumps, sub harmonics, biphonation, and deterministic chaos.

Developmental changes in the facial morphology of the Borneo Orangutan (pongo pygmaeus): Possible signals in visual communication

Article Abstract:

The developmental changes in the facial morphology of the Borneo orangutan by observing 79 individuals of various ages living in the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center (SORC) in Malaysia and in Japanese zoos are studied. The result shows that the facial morphology of the unflanged male is similar to that of the adult female.

Fast and reliable sexing of prosimian and human DNA

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to design a single, conserved primer pair that is useful for fast and reliable molecular sexing of prosimian primates. It is shown that an existing method based on a size difference between the X and Y homologs does not work in prosimians.
