On estimating processing variance: commentary and reanalysis of Kail's "Developmental Functions for Speeds of Cognitive Processes."

Article Abstract:

A reanalysis of the results of a paper published by Kail in 1988 indicate an overestimation of the variance which can be attributed to his model. Kail's model involves a central mechanism that defines mental processing. This error in computation was caused by the use of an inappropriate method for statistical analysis. The results of the reanalysis show that the variance which can be explained by his model is much lower than his proposed values of 91-95%.

Evidence for global developmental change is intact

Article Abstract:

A reanalysis of Kail's model of global developmental change conducted by Morrison and others has not rendered the said model inaccurate. One major mistake in the Morrisons' paper is their overemphasis on the computed variance. Their suggestion that linear and logarithmic functions be used in evaluating development is also flawed. Furthermore, their criticism of the procedures used for estimating the variance for developmental functions is unfounded.

Phonological skill and articulation time independently contribute to the development of memory span

Article Abstract:

Speed of processing, memory span, phonological skill and articulation task were administered to 120 6-10 year olds, to examine the speed with which they could repeat familiar stimuli aloud. Performance on the span tasks was found to be predicted by performance on phonology and articulation task, following regression analyses. Performance was not predicted by age or performance on the processing speed tasks.
