Parents' and partners' life course and family experiences: links with parent-child relationships in different family settings

Article Abstract:

This article investigates the relationship between the early life experiences of parents and stepparents and their current parent-child relationships. Findings indicate that parent-child relationships were influenced by parents' and partners' previous life experiences and that parents who experienced significant early adversities had less affectionate relationships with their children.

Family lives and friendships: the perspectives of children in step-, single-parent, and nonstep families

Article Abstract:

Data collected from 238 children from different family settings (step-families, single-parent families, and intact families) was analyzed to determine the quality of the children's friendships. The authors, focusing on the children's communication skills, found that children view friends as confidants when discussing family issues, and maintain there is a link between biological relatedness and family setting with friendships.

Predictors of between-family and within-family variation in parent-child relationships

Article Abstract:

Potential sources of between-family and within-family variation in parent-child relationship quality were studied using multilevel model analyses. It indicated substantial within-family variation in parent-child relationship quality and greater within-family variation in complex/stepmother families compared to other family types because of differences in the siblings' biological relatedness to parents and aggressive behavior.
