Perception of multidimensional stimuli: a differential-sensitivity account of cognitive processing and development

Article Abstract:

Perceptual sensitivity and selectivity are investigated in four experiments among young and old children. It is held that young children's visual and cognitive processing of multidimensional stimuli are nonselective. The view that development of perceptual sensitivity to object relations is directly perceived is compared with the integrality-separability view. Results showed that both young and old children have highly selective perceptions and they classify stimuli by separate dimensions.
