Personality characteristics of adult children of alcoholics

Article Abstract:

A study of the validity of personality measures in apprehending factors ascribed to adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) using personality tests failed to show variations between ACOA and control men. Research results also revealed a significant discriminant function that linked independence, self-confidence and self-directedness with an ACOA for women. The study identified 29% of the subjects as ACOA's using the California Personality Inventory and the Children of Alcoholic Screening Test.

Maybe the study didn't show much difference because ACOAs and "control" men are one and the same. The study identified 29% of the subjects as ACOAs. But in reality it is probably closer to 95% when you figure that almost everyone grows up with some dysfunction in their homes.

The alcohol paradox: a psychological model

Article Abstract:

A two-part schematic model to examine continued heavy drinking by alcoholics in spite of physical degradation may be useful. The model given examines primary neuropsychological disabilities resulting from persistent alcohol intake and secondary phobia of catastrophic losses affecting brain dysfunction. The model may also be useful for those studying perserverative behavior in different brain syndromes.
