Phonology acquired through the eyes and spelling in deaf children

Article Abstract:

Hearing and deaf children, matched for general spelling level, were asked to spell high-frequency and low-frequency words to determine their performance with regard to degree of exposure to Cued Speech (CS). The majority of spelling productions of hearing children and of CS-Home children were phonologically accurate for high and low frequency words. This suggests that the accuracy of phonological representations are independent of the modality via which spoken language is perceived.

The rhyming skills of deaf children educated with phonetically augmented speechreading

Article Abstract:

This study compares the rhyming ability of deaf children who were educated through cued speech to those who were educated primarily through sign language. Cued speech is a communication system that uses gestures to provide the learner with phonological information that aids in disambiguating sounds, which enhances rhyme judgement.

Dimensional adjectives: Factors affecting children's ability to compare objects using novel words

Article Abstract:

A study looked at children's ability to compare objects using novel words and concluded that acquisition of dimensional adjectives may be impeded by having to learn categorical as well as comparative meanings.
