Dieting and the family context of eating in young adolescent children

Article Abstract:

Children whose eating is highly restrained do not differ from their unrestrained peers in their views about parental food-related nurturance, according to research undertaken among 402 children with a mean age of 12 years, one month. However, there was a substantial main effect of gender, with boys being much more likely than girls to be given their favourite foods when hurt or ill. It seems that 12-year-old dieters are quite serious in their nutritional behaviour, with the measures of dietary restraint, past and present dieting and fasting being all closely linked with each other.

Vegetarianism in young women: another means of weight control?

Article Abstract:

Young women decide to become vegetarian mainly for health reasons, but some also identify weight loss as their reason for making this dietary choice. Female young vegetarians show more dietary restraint than non-vegetarians, but are no more likely to be currently dieting. This indicates that meat avoidance is a watching rather than a weight loss nutritional strategy. It is important to separate the role of vegetarianism in the maintenance of weight loss or control from its role in the prompting of dieting.
