Practice guideline for the treatment of patients with nicotine dependence

Article Abstract:

The American Psychiatric Assn.'s Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Nicotine Dependence is intended for clinicians caring for nicotine-dependent patients. The guideline includes diagnostic criteria for nicotine dependence, epidemiology and natural history, treatment principles and alternatives as well as specific psychosocial and somatic treatments. Formulation and implementation of a treatment plan, clinical features influencing treatment and research directions are also included in the guideline.

Practice guideline for the treatment of patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias of late life

Article Abstract:

The American Psychiatric Assn.'s practice guideline for Alzheimer's disease and other aging-associated dementias is presented. The guideline covers such dementias as Parkinson's disease, Pick's and Lewy body disease and is not for the treatment of dementias related to general medical conditions. The practice guideline devotes significant attention to behavioral symptoms as well as to the administration of treatments for functional and cognitive disorders.

Nicotine dependence: perspectives on a new guideline from APA

The American Psychiatric Assn.'s practice guideline, Treatment of Patients With Nicotine Dependence, seeks to address the epidemic of nicotine dependence among youth. The guideline aims to effect changes in treatment approaches to nicotine dependence as well as public health policies regarding smoking. The document, which reviews both well-established therapies and experimental approaches, reflects the classic model of public health care.
