Professional psychology after communism: the case of Romania

Article Abstract:

The history of psychology in Romania is presented. During the communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu, psychologists were persecuted because they were seen as a threat to the government. Fortunately, since the collapse of communism in 1989, there has been a resurgence of activities in psychology in the country. The practice of psychology in Romania in relation to credentialing, ethics and the law, hospitals and clinics, armed forces, industry, research centers, academia, and private practice are desribed. The implications of Romanian psychology for professional practice in the US is discussed.

Illinois School of Professional Psychology predoctoral minor in sexual abuse

Article Abstract:

The Illinois School of Professional Psychology has created a predoctoral program for clinicians preparing to treat victims of sexual abuse. The program was made with an emphasis on the ecological model of sexual abuse that recognizes the occurrence of other forms of abuse as well as the existence of other mental disorders among abusers and survivors of abuse. It requires 16 credit hours of coursework on topics such as child maltreatment, forensic issues and assessment of abuse, sexually abused children of color and child psychopathology.

A case for interdependence in psychology

Interdependence among the domains of psychology is discussed, with a focus on the role of the American Psychological Association (APA). Topics include the National Academy of Sciences model, interdependence at APA and a view of the future.
