Proximate mechanisms of reproductive monopolization in male moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax)

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate the possible impact of agonistic interactions and mate-guarding on the monopolization of paternity in male moustached tamarins. The results reveals that while direct agonistic competition does not play a prominent part, and endocrine differences between adult males are likewise not apparent, access to a fertile female is mainly regulated by the consorting of one male, which is probably centered around the female's periods of high fertility.
