Reading and spelling acquisition in French: the role of phonological mediation and orthographic factors

Article Abstract:

A research was conducted to analyze the acquisition of reading and spelling skills in French based on the hypotheses that phonological mediation and the construction of orthographic lexicons characterize the learning process. It was found that phonological mediation is important in the development of reading and spelling. It was also revealed that phonological skills are positively correlated with orthographic skills. In addition, characteristics of the French language account for the stronger dependence on grapheme-phoneme correspondences than on rime units.

Working memory and access to numerical information in children with disability in mathematics

Article Abstract:

The examination of the relationship among working memory, mathematics ability, and the cognitive impairment of children with difficulties in mathematics (MD) is done. The findings indicate a general working memory deficit in children with MD specifically in the central executive components of Baddeley's model and primarily in the ability to inhibit irrelevant information.

Short-term memory, working memory, and inhibitory control in children with difficulties in arithmetic problem solving

Article Abstract:

This article examines children who display problems with solving arithmetic problems. The authors, comparing the children with a group of good problem solvers, conclude the poor problem solvers had lower scores and made more errors when the task required the inhibition of irrelevant information, demonstrating a deficit in inhibitory processes.
