Kindergarten letter knowledge, phonological skills, and memory processes: relative effects on early literacy

Article Abstract:

A study of a group of German children shows that kindergarten phonological skills can be used to predict literacy performance in first and second grades. A high level of letter knowledge also can be a reliable predictor. However, these results vary from those obtained from English speaking populations. Differences in orthography, early literacy knowledge, and the age at which children start reading might account for the variations.
