Rhythmic cues and possible-word constraints in Japanese speech segmentation

Issues concerning word recognition for speakers of the Japanese language are examined. Topics include how Japanese differs from Indo-European languages; the importance of vowel and consonant contexts; and experimental support for the theory of lexical segmentation.

Processing resyllabified words in French

Article Abstract:

The ability of French listeners to recognize vowel-initial words in liaison environment was analyzed. It was observed that the subtle, subphonemic cues to their intention that speakers provided assisted the listeners in spoken word recognition.

Lexical competition in non-native spoken-word recognition

Article Abstract:

Lexical competition in non-native spoken-word recognition is examined through four eye-tracking experiments. One of its two conclusions is that lexical completion is greater for non-native than for native listeners.
