Self-evaluation maintenance in marriage: toward a performance ecology of the marital relationship

Article Abstract:

The process of maintaining marital relationships follows the principles of a performance ecology in which, performance niches of partners serve as the context for understanding relationship processes. The self-evaluation maintenance (SEM) model can effectively demonstrate the structure of the performance ecology. A series of studies show that experimental manipulations of SEM processes affect the behavior of married couples. Spouses structure their joint activities in such a way so as to minimize negative social comparison.
