Sex differences in human mate preferences: evolutionary hypotheses tested in 37 cultures

Article Abstract:

Contemporary preferences for types of mate can throw light on human reproductive history. Not much is known about the qualities people value in potential mates. Predictions were made about different mate preferences in men and women based on theories about the role in evolution of parental commitment of time and resources, mate choices, human reproductive capacity, and the higher certainty of maternity than paternity. The predictions focused on how much each sex would value earning capacity, ambition and industriousness, youth, physical attractiveness, and chastity. Predictions were tested against data from 37 samples drawn from 33 countries located on 6 continents and 5 islands. Ten thousand people were questioned. For 27 countries, demographic data on actual age at marriage was used to check the validity of questionnaire responses. Females were found to value earning capacity more highly than males. Males valued signs of reproductive capacity more than did females. These sex differences may reflect different factors affecting the selection of women and men in the process of evolution. These data provide evidence of current cross-cultural sex differences in reproductive strategies. Mechanisms underlying mate preferences, their consequences for competition between members of the same sex, and the limitations of the study are discussed.

How to harness Europe's Celtic tiger

Article Abstract:

Ireland's construction industry has increased since 1994, with predicted growth of 14.7% in 1997 from 17.7% growth in 1996. Economic stability has been achieved through low taxes on business, an increasingly educated workforce and involvement with the European Monetary Union, which has led to several large business, such as IBM, opening new offices. UK construction firms have been warned against trying to penetrate the Irish market, with claims that the market is still very small compared to the rest of Europe. Irish construction firms are usually given precedence over UK firms when it comes to contracts.
