Sex, money and financial hardship: an empirical study of attitudes towards money among undergraduates in Singapore

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to evaluate the role of gender, personal significance of money and previous experiences of financial hardships on the responses of Singaporean students to money attitude questions. Results show that there is an interplay between the personal significance of money and previous experiences of financial hardships on money attitudes, with previous experience having a larger role in shaping money attitudes. Previous financial hardship experiences predisposed many of the students to use money as a means of evaluation and to be more generous in terms of their contribution to the less fortunate.
