Short normal children and environmental disadvantage: A longitudinal study of growth and cognitive development from 4 to 11 years

Article Abstract:

A statistically significant link between stature and intelligence has been observed, but the significant link between short stature and learning difficulties found in clinic-referred samples may be due to a referral bias. A follow up investigation of exceptionally short but medically healthy children living in an inner city area has been undertaken. At four years of age cases were significantly impaired in cognitive abilities, and at 11 years of age, one third had special educational needs, with a similar proportion having been referred for speech therapy. Verbal and nonverbal cognitive skills had changed little.

The parenting and family functioning of children with hyperactivity

Article Abstract:

A sample of 30 boys with pervasive hyperactivity and 28 comparison control boys participated in a study which examined the association of parenting and family functioning with hyperactive children. The children's teachers and parents were asked to complete the Rutter A and B Scales, a screening procedure which identifies children with pervasive hyperactive behavior problems. The Child-Rearing Practices Report was then used to assess parenting attitudes and behavior. Results showed that children's hyperactive behavior problems are shaped by the manner their parents treat them.
