Sociocultural influences in the theory of Karen Horney

Article Abstract:

The roots of Karen Horney's theories of psychoanalysis are presented. Horney, born in Germany, both loved and hated her mother, and could not tolerate her father's coldness although she valued the link to his native Norway. Horney's challenge of Freud's theories may be associated with her disagreement with the patriarchal family of the Victorian era. Her theories may have been influenced by Henrik Ibsen, who wrote about Norwegian society in the early 1900s.
