Stressful life events, psychological well-being, and parenting in African American mothers

Article Abstract:

There are links between family disruption and work difficulties and lower maternal acceptance among African American mothers. There are also positive connections between family disruption and mothers' strong control of behaviour. Family disruption and work-related stress can lead to a decline in African American mothers' self-esteem, while health-related problems in this population group can lead to a rise in psychological distress. There is evidence of the mediational impact of mothers' psychological well-being in the link between stress events and mothers' parenting.

Blame, shame and contamination: The impact of mental illness and drug dependence stigma on family members

Article Abstract:

Some ways that family role and psychiatric disorder influence family stigma are examined, using a vignette design describing a person with a health condition and a family member. Family stigma related to drug dependence is worse than for other health conditions, with family members being blamed for both the onset and offset of a relative's disorder and likely to be socially shunned.
