Thyroid hormone and attention in school-age children with congenital hypothyroidism

Article Abstract:

High levels of thyroxine (T4) and thyrotropin (TSH) affect cognitive attention in children with congenital hypothyroidism (CH). A study of 86 seven-year old CH children shows that those with high level of T4 and TSH have poorer cognitive attention but less hyperactivity than those with low hormonal levels. The level of T4 and TSH has no effect on other cognitive activities and intelligence. High levels of T4 correlate with poor attention and high TSH levels affect hyperactivity.
