Individual differences in young chldren's IQ: A social-developmental perspective

Article Abstract:

The extent to which the cognitive functioning of young children depends on the quality of parent-child relationships is a controversial question in developmental psychology. A study indicates the potential effect o parent-child interactions on children's language acquisition and general cognitive development, using data from selected studies. Children of secure mothers scored 19 points higher on a version of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, compared to those of insecure mothers. The results indicated complex relations between maternal IQ and education, family SES, parent-child synchrony and child IQ.
