Taxation and female participation in the labor market

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the influence of tax changes on female participation in the labor market. Factors pertinent to the issue are discussed with respect to previous studies made on the relationship between labor market decisions and low and high income households. Results indicate that female participation is more susceptible to tax changes largely due to traditional concepts on the division of labor in households with respect to gender. There is also evidence that the tax treatment of childcare also plays a role in these decisions.

Discrimination, social psychology, and hysteresis in labor markets

Article Abstract:

A theory of the long-term effects of labor market discrimination is presented. The concept of learned helplessness is used to show that negative events which are considered as beyond the individual's control lead to a decline in learning ability. Discrimination is found to be a negative event beyond an individual's control that creates a sense of helplessness which decreases human capital characteristics and lessens future employability.
