The Personal Attitude Scale: a scale to measure spontaneity
Article Abstract:
The Personal Attitude Scale (PAS) is a valid and reliable measure of spontaneity in individuals. Correlational analysis was conducted for the Self-Monitoring Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Sensation-Seeking Scale. Values for internal consistency reliability were .86 for women and .77 for men. Construct validity, however, was mixed, with slightly better results produced for women than men. This difference may warrant further examination.

Seven books on mental illness by patients and/or their caregivers are evaluated. These include 'An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness' by psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison who recounts her personal struggle with manic depression and 'An Anthropologists on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales' by Oliver Sacks which features stories on seven people who successfully overcame their physical and mental afflictions.
