The belief in a just world and subjective perceptions of society: A developmental perspective

Article Abstract:

A study hypothesizes that just world beliefs, that is, the belief that the world is orderly and just, are primitive beliefs that lose their importance across age as they are replaced by more sophisticated forms of reasoning enabling individuals to handle a world that is neither orderly nor just. Administration of the Just World Beliefs Scale and the Individualism-Collectivism Scale to adolescents and young adults reveals that general beliefs in a just world begin to lose their importance around the age of 12, followed by personal beliefs around the age of 16.

Three conflict resolution patterns were found to exemplify how partners handle their disagreements, namely Downplaying, characterized by a high tendency to minimize the conflict, the Integrative pattern, which shows a good ability to negotiate differences, and Conflictive, characterized by a confrontative interaction.
