Issues are presented concerning the emergence of dieting among 478 adolescent girls over a 2-year period. The commencement of dieting was not associated with higher body mass index but could be triggered by concerns following body shape changes.

Social influences are the strongest predictor of dieting among teenaged girls aged 12 to 17. Conformity with friends' opinions was a stronger influence than parental factors.
