The framing effect and risky decisions: Examining cognitive functions with fMRI

Article Abstract:

The "framing effect," is observed when the description of options in terms of gains or positive frame rather than losses or negative frames eliciting different choices. A paper using the cognitive information-processing principles to explain the framing effect is presented. Using the functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) an evaluation of the individuals who were asked to choose between one certain alternative and one risky alternative in response to problems framed as gains or losses is analyzed. The results indicate that the cognitive effort required to choose a sure gain was lower than one required to choose a risky gain. Other results are also discussed.
