The impact of prenatal maternal stress and optimistic disposition on birth outcomes in medically high-risk women

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between stress, disposition, and birth outcomes in women with high-risk pregnancies. Results indicate that women with high levels of dispositional optimism were more likely to perceive stress positively, exercise, and deliver infants with higher birth weights when compared to less optimistic women.

Life event stress and the association with spontaneous abortion in gravid women at an urban emergency department

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between stressful life events and spontaneous abortion during early stages of pregnancy. Results indicate that women who reported more than one stressful life event drank more alcohol, were more likely to rely on public assistance, and had higher rates of miscarriage in normal pregnancies.

Depressive symptomatology during pregnancy: evidence for an association with decreased fetal growth in pregnancies of lower class women

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between depression during pregnancy and reductions in fetal growth. Results indicate that there is a significant relationship between elevated scores on a depression scale and lower birth weights among women from lower social classes.
