The interplay between geometry and function in the comprehension of "over," "under," "above," and "below"

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the manner in which the prepositions such as "over," "under," "above," and "below" are comprehended are examined, focusing on how functional and geometric relations contribute to the contribution. Topics include how the function of an object which is described by the preposition in a phrase such as "at the piano" are sometimes as important to comprehension as the geometric realtionship as the object of the preoposition and a subject in a sentence.

Issues concerning the properties that emerge from conceptual combinations of different terms, such as those found in the terms "homepage" and "couch potato," are examined, focusing on how the properties of the combination relate to the properties of each element. Topics include the differing properties of similar and dissimilar pairs of terms, and the conclusion that emergence is more prevalent with similar terms.

The role of suppression and enhancement in understanding metaphors

Article Abstract:

Suppression and enhancement effects have shown that metaphors stand for the superordinate category of that vehicle, rather than for basic-level meaning. Verification latencies for property statements were faster after participants read a metaphor-prime sentence but were slower when property statements were relevant only to basic-level meaning.
