The relationship between obesity and medical utilization among women in a primary care setting

Article Abstract:

Samples of obese and non-obese women with a mean age of 33.6 years were compared with regard to their morbidity, or prevalence of medical diagnoses, and their utilization of health care resources. The results suggest a relationship between increase in body weight and the number of medical diagnoses, and between the number of diagnoses and the frequency of health care service utilization. The findings also indicate that obese women's patterns of physician contact may be influenced by certain psychosocial and illness factors.
