The relationship between socioeconomic status and eating-disordered behaviors in a community sample of adolescent girls

Article Abstract:

The relationship between eating-disordered attitudes and socioeconomic status was analyzed using a community sample of adolescent girls-Grades 7 to 12. Chi-square tests and analysis of variance were used to examine the comprehensive self-report health survey. Results show a significant positive relationship between certain poor eating behaviors and socioeconomic status. However, no relationship was detected between socioeconomic status and self-reported vomiting and other dieting behaviors.

A study of both male and female adolescents of different ethnic/racial and socioeconomic (SES) groups reveals that unhealthy weight control behaviors are not limited to upper SES white females and that Hispanic females engaged in greater use of diuretics, Asians did more binge eating and blacks reported higher vomiting rates compared to white females.
