The role of familial values in understanding the impact of social class on weight concern

Article Abstract:

People belonging to higher social classes are more likely than those belonging to lower social classes to show restrained eating, body distortion and body dissatisfaction. It appears that social class is linked to both weight concern and values. Restrained eating, body distortion and body dissatisfaction are linked to values relating to family, physical appearance and achievement, but are all also predicted by social class. Individual values may relate to levels of weight concern, but these values are still generally aligned with class.

The role of family status and ethnic group on body image and eating behavior

Article Abstract:

The influence of mother/daughter relationships and ethnicity on body dissatisfaction and eating behavior was investigated. One hundred women, equally divided between Asian mothers and daughters and Caucasian mothers and daughters, were surveyed about their perceived acculturation, body image and eating habits. The results did not reveal any matching between mothers and daughters or any impact of perceived ethnic identity on body image or eating behavior. Other findings are discussed.

The role of the mother-daughter relationship in explaining weight concern

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the role of the mother-daughter relationship in the development of weight concern in young girls are discussed. It was established that, although mothers and daughters were similar in their weight and body mass index, there were no links for their restrained eating or body dissatisfaction.
