Usefulness of experiments for the study of the family

Article Abstract:

The demonstration of interrelationships in family variables is losing its research value. Experiments can help in explaining the relationships between variables, the direction of effects and the causal relations. However, family research has not optimized the use of the experimental method. The analysis includes the practical and ethical aspects of family research experiments and the guidelines for using the experiment correctly. A comparison of the experimental method's advantages and disadvantages with those of other methodologies is presented.

Family interaction, parenting style, and the development of planning: A longitudinal analysis using archival data

Article Abstract:

There are few studies examining children's experience with planning-related discussions in the family. Data from the Family socialization and Developmental Competence Project was analyzed to study the role parents play in the development of planning. Results suggest that discussions begin early in the child's life and that the children initiate more of them with age. More planning discussions were initiated in adolescence by children with authoritative, permissive and uninvolved parents, than those with directive parents.

Antecedents of work and family role expectations of college men

Article Abstract:

A study on gender role development was conducted. The undertaking involved 190 male college juniors and seniors. The findings suggest that a father taking part in household chores, a permissive perception concerning work and family role attitudes and higher levels of expressiveness are related to an orientation toward a marriage and family lifestyle wherein traditional divided roles are shared by parents.
