Visual signals and the communication abilities of children

Article Abstract:

Access to visual signals adversely affects the communication abilities of younger children, but fails to affect the abilities of older children. Younger children communicate well in face-to-face interactions, but fail to cope with the lack of visual information in the audio-only contexts. In contrast, older children perform well in both situations. Younger children use a non-verbal format to communicate information that is difficult to express verbally. Thus, they find the combined visual and verbal information-processing less difficult.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: advances in cognitive, neurobiological, and genetic research

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to examine the potential of conceptual and technological advances in cognitive neuroscience and molecular genetics in identifying the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study reveals that genes within the dopamine system are responsible for the etiology of ADHD. The study is limited, however, because behavioral phenotype is difficult to measure due to the absence of laboratory or pathological diagnostic tests.
