What do pointing errors really tell us about internal coordinate transformation?

Article Abstract:

Absoulute error in final finger position was interpreted by Martha Flanders et al as a deviation resulting from the inexact coordinate transformation from the shoulder-centered extrinsic frame of reference based on target distance, azimuth and elevation and yaw of upper and lower arm. It was suggested that only a part of the absolute error results from this distortion in the coordinate transformation and errors in controlling the pointing movement itself rather than the final position may contribute. It was further suggested that caution should be exercised in the overinterpretation of results.

What are voluntary movements made of?

Article Abstract:

Rat behavior is analyzed in the context of Ilan Golani's mobility gradient. The sequences of behavior were seen as an expansion and contraction along the mobility gradient with postural support playing a central role. It was suggested hpwever, that complete behavioral descriptions must include other sensory systems, environmental context and cognitive processes. A connection between the mobility gradient and forebrain activity was also established in the sense that the forebrain can direct expansion and contraction along the mobility gradient.

Kinesthesia and unique solutions for control of multijoint movements

Article Abstract:

Martha Flanders et al's article shows how analytical techniques reveal possible channels that the central nervous system extracts from proprioceptive input and uses to control a multisegment movement. It was shown that the visual system and sensorimotor system extract many features in parallel indicating that the two systems perform similar tasks and can be subjected to the same analysis. There is an ultimate need for both systems to cooperate together with or without coordinate transformation from head to shoulder.
