When religion collides with medicine

Article Abstract:

A case study on the conflict between religious belief and medical ethics is presented. In this case, a member of Jehovah's Witness refused the transfusion of blood and blood products on ground of her religious beliefs. A psychiatrist who was called to assess the patient's psychiatric conditions concluded that the patient made on informed and competent decision and thus, the patient was allowed to die. It is shown that psychiatric intervention cannot substitute for the appreciation of cultural and religious beliefs in cases of conflicts with medical ethics.
