Working memory deficits of reading disabled children

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the working memory of reading disabled children. The two objectives of the study are to define the specificity of the deficits in working memory capacity and to determine whether the disorder is caused by either verbal short-term storage capacity or deficient processing mechanism. Two groups of normal reading children were compared with a group of reading disabled children. Results indicate that reading disability cannot be attributed to either causes but to the lack of ability for concurrent processing and information storage.

Practitioner review: developmental language disorders: a clinical update

Article Abstract:

Developmental learning disorders consist of mixed receptive/expressive, expressive and higher order processing disorders with deficits in language processing abilities. The mixed type shows impairments in phonology, syntax and semantics. Children with expressive disorders exhibit severe difficulty in phonologic production of language. Higher processing disorders affect semantics, pragmatics and discourse. Etiological factors are usually genetic and at times, structural. Early educational intervention serves as effective and critical preventive therapy.
