Working memory in children with autism and with moderate learning difficulties

Article Abstract:

Autistic children perform poorly on working memory tasks as compared to normally developing children, but as equally as children with moderate learning difficulties. A study involving two experiments shows that autistic children and normal children are almost similar in their ability to employ articulatory rehearsal. The former have greater spans than that of children with moderate learning difficulties on the task. On capacity tasks, which test working memory, autistic children's performance is inferior to that of the controls and similar to that of children with moderate difficulties.

Serial order reconstruction in Down syndrome: Evidence for a selective deficit in verbal short-term memory

Article Abstract:

The serial order reconstruction in Down syndrome and the evidence for a selective deficit in verbal short-term memory is discussed. The results provide strong evidence that Down syndrome is associated with a selective deficit in verbal short-term memory, and a deficit in verbal serial order memory in particular.
