A short run for the money

Article Abstract:

On-demand, short-run printing represents a large and growing segment of the four-color printing industry. Digital presses that reproduce quality color output are widely available. Some feature personalized printing, which allow data on each page to be changed during the print run. Vendors of digital presses are continually adding value to their products and improving image quality. Still, some of the digital presses still have limitations. Many cannot use Pantone colors and are limited on the paper stock on which it can print. However, quality is outstanding, registration tight and prepress workflow has been streamlined. Because there is no stripping and negatives are not involved, the amount of time it takes to get a job on the press is substantially reduced over traditional methods. Consumables are costly, and make up the bulk of ongoing expenses.
