Adobe Acrobat 2.0, Adobe Acrobat Pro 2.0, Adobe Acrobat 2.0 for Workgroups
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems Inc makes significant progress towards turning its Acrobat portable document software into a useful workgroup and network platform with the introduction of its three versions of Adobe Acrobat 2.0. Adobe Acrobat 2.0, priced at $195, requires System 7 or Windows 3.1 and 5MB and 4MB of RAM. Adobe Acrobat Pro 2.0, priced at $595, requires 8MB of RAM, as does the Adobe Acrobat for Workgroups 2.0, which sells in a 10-license bundle for $1,595. Of the two format options, PDF and PDF with Acrobat Distiller, the latter is required for accurate replication of original documents, although this process is time-consuming. The programs offer a more efficient font management scheme, and a full-screen view functionality. The most beneficial improvements are found in the group application, which enables images to be indexed and shared across networks. A designated folder function enables the user to copy and save PostScipt files. Although files are huge and memory requirements steep, this is an electronic publishing platform that may become a standard.

Memory-hungry graphics
Article Abstract:
Creating Adobe Illustrator files and printing them on a Linotronic is an application that requires more memory than is currently available, but upgrades for the RIP II, Linotronic 200, and PostScript 49.3 are on the way. Until then, however, the problem must be controlled. Because of the fact that two prep files are sometimes loaded into a printer's memory, a limited memory is stressed. The answer is to create one disk file that can be downloaded to the Linotronic easily. A detailed explanation on this procedure is given. However, the problem may lie with the Illustrator files themselves, but they can be managed by following some tips that are also given. Should a problem persist, a troubleshooting checklist is provided that should help resolve it.

Adobe Acrobat 4.0
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' $249 Adobe Acrobat 4.0 portable document format (PDF) software is an exceptional product and is highly recommended. The Acrobat suite includes three parts: Acrobat itself is for creating, reading, editing, and managing PDF files; Distiller, is for converting PostScript to PDF; and Catalog is for indexing PDF files. Version 4.0's Distiller is much improved but is still difficult for non-technical users. A particularly important innovation is Distiller's help with color management. Generally speaking, unlike many upgrades, Acrobat 4.0 can be said to be worth the money and the time it takes to learn to work with it.
