MarkzScout automates the grunt work

Article Abstract:

MarkzWare Inc's $799 MarkzWare MarkzScout is an easy-to-use file management tool that simplifies and streamlines much of the cumbersome detail involved in prepress work. Essentially, this product is comprised of an object-oriented database with an attached scripting language. It creates workflow schematics with a simple graphical interface, although a lack of drag and drop functionality limits the capabilities of the editing tool.

Adobe FrameMaker 5.5

Article Abstract:

Adobe Systems $895 FrameMaker 5.5 page layout software is a difficult application to learn, but it provides exceptional control over the creation and management of long, complex technical documents. FrameMaker is a frame-based product that has the ability to number tables and graphics, handle cross-references, build indexes and tables of contents, and lock graphics to paragraphs of text. It also includes Acrobat Distiller and Reader and Internet publishing tools that enable corporate users to easily convert their documents for use on corporate intra- and extranets. FrameMaker 5.5 includes a number of features intended to make the product more compatible with the company's Portable Document Format (PDF). It also adds the ability to handle multiple languages within the same paragraph, warns on launch of font conflicts, enhances its support for color-management libraries and gains context-sensitive shortcut menus. The product's greatest shortcut is its lack of two-way linking capabilities.

PDF and CTP: Acrobat steps up to the plate. Can it hit a home run?

Article Abstract:

The portable document format (PDF) may combine with computer-to-plate (CTP) processes to make printing faster and less expensive. Web printer Sells Printing uses two Creo Trendsetters in its CTP workflow to save money by eliminating film. The company also hoped to reduce turnaround time and improve quality. Sells was a beta test site for the Prinergy system from Creo and Heidelberg. Prinergy is based on PostScript Extreme and converts job information from an Oracle database into PostScript's Portable Job Ticket Format. RIP files are used to make proofs and to image the plates, but the same file must be used for both to maintain quality. PDF makes possible a completely digital workflow, and it generates predictable and stable output on any output system. It is also editable, and PDF files are smaller than their RIP counterparts. PDF output files are page oriented: when the publication file is imposed and pages are arranged onto a printer's flat, the pages remain discrete elements to facilitate corrections.
