Article Abstract:

The absence of laws regulating broadcasting, as well as the lack of anti-trust rules in the Russian Media Law of 1991, has created favorable conditions for the formation of media empires, established in mid-1990 by so called oligarchs close to the Kremlin. The Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised to submit a draft to the parliament, blessing the version to be more useful to him to continue perfecting the system 'managed democracy' in Russia.

Article Abstract:

The acquisition of NTV by Gazprom puts the last independent television station in Russia into the hands of a company that supports Vladimir Putin and his policies. A possible acquisition of NTV by Ted Turner and other western broadcasters was ended when the Russian Duma voted to ban foreigners from investing in Russian media companies.

Article Abstract:

The public relations company Promaco offered 21 Russian periodicals money to publish an advertisement for a fake electronics store as an article. Thirteen magazines and newspapers accepted payment to publish the story. Promaco said it offered the story to show the corruption in the Russian publishing industry.
